Mass hysteria y’all! This week Facebook unveiled a new branded content policy and tool…and it literally broke the internet. Here’s an excerpt:
Branded content is a growing and evolving part of the media landscape. On Facebook, we define this as content that features a third party product, brand, or sponsor (“marketer”). It is typically posted by media companies, celebrities, or other influencers. Verified Pages (with the blue checkmark) can share branded content on Facebook as long as they follow our updated branded content policy and ads policy and use the branded content tool to tag marketers in their posts.
I don’t know about you..but that policy is confusing as hell! Does it mean that we needed to get Verified in order to share branded content? Did we have to tag every single brand ever mentioned on our Facebook pages? As you can imagine..there was lots of confusion about the new rules! Bloggers high and low were scrambling to get verified and shaking their fists at Facebook because once again, they were the evil powers that be.Quit freaking out about the new Facebook branded content policy, it probably doesn't apply to you! Click To Tweet
BUT, fortunately….the truth is…this new branded content policy probably doesn’t affect you..unless of course you are a celebrity, sports entertainer, or a media company, etc. (aka the BIG GUYS). Not to burst your bubble, but if you are just a blogger with a fan page, Facebook doesn’t care about you.
Here’s confirmation from the SoFab Team:
**IMPORTANT** We have talked to our contact at Facebook and he has confirmed the following: Personal accounts used to share branded content are not affected by Facebook’s recent Branded Content Policy.
If you are using a Page on Facebook to share branded content and your page is NOT verified you do not need to do anything differently and the updated policy released by Facebook recently does not apply to you.
If you are using a Page on Facebook to share branded content and your page IS verified you must use the new tool released by Facebook to share branded content and the updated policy does apply to you.
So what does this mean for the rest of us non-celebrities? It’s business as usual! You can still share your sponsored posts, affiliate links and share other content without having to tag the brand or use the branded content tool. You are still free to do whatever the hell you like!
For once..I’m saying THANK YOU FACEBOOK!
