If you are just tuning into the Passion Project series, this is a monthly series where I update you on the success/failures of a brand new site, Melasma Diaries, which was started at the end of May. The goal of this project is to show you the process of building a profitable blog from the very beginning.
I started this website because I, myself, have Melasma (and it’s an incurable bitch!) but mostly because there are thousands of women out there that have Melasma and don’t have a place to go for honest reviews of products that work, don’t have a community to rally around and mostly have a place to go for support. As you’ve probably heard me say a million times before…”To Make a Million, You Must Help a Million”…and my goal is to help women with this skin condition the best way I know how to.
This month I wrote a total of 9 articles or just about 2 per week. I originally planned on having more content go up on the site, however, my VA got sick this month and was not able to complete a few assignments. Hopefully, I’ll make up for it in August
I had a total of 12,493 pageviews last month and most of that traffic came from Pinterest & Organic Search. Below I will show you a few strategies that I’ve been using in both Pinterest & SEO to drive traffic.
If you read this blog post then you already know that I’ve had some successes with Google showing Melasma Diaries blog posts in search. I’m pretty happy about that..because um hello…free traffic from Google is the best kind of traffic there is!
If you are interested in seeing the exact process I use to find out which keywords to target, watch this video.
For some reason, Pinterest marked my website as Spam this month. So for just over 24 hours, I wasn’t getting any traffic from Pinterest. Instead, users were getting a pop-up that warned them that my site might be spam. This was annoying. But in order to resolve it, I sent a support message to Pinterest and they got back to me within 24 hours admitting that it was their mistake and they fixed it immediately. Considering I’m getting anywhere from 200-300 visits per day from Pinterest…it’s a big deal!
Currently, I only have 160 followers on Pinterest, but in August I’m going to continue the same process I outlined in this blog post and follow all of the people who are Pinning my pins in the hopes that they follow back.
Social Media Sharing Threads:
If you’ve read this blog post, then you know that I recommend for new blogs to engage in FB Sharing threads to get traffic to their blog. Ironically enough..I’m not following my advice that well. Because Melasma is a skin disorder I feel very awkward asking people to Pin & Share it who aren’t familiar with the condition. So, for the most part, I’ve shied away from those threads and have only participated when I have a more ‘general beauty’ type of post.
I was VERY happy with the amount of affiliate commission I made from Amazon this month. I managed to sell close to $2,000 in product which is just crazy considering I only have 25 published posts on the site! The melasma makeup roundups that I’m creating for the site are driving big money, so I will continue to create at least a couple of those per month.
My August goals are to hit 500 Facebook fans (I’m at 424) & to earn $200 in affiliate commissions.
