It’s time for my very first Passion Project update. Last month I told you about a new passion project/ new blog that I started and I’m so excited to share with you the results. Overall…I’m pretty happy with the progress of the new site and while I didn’t accomplish all of the goals I had for the month, I’m still very happy with it.
Melasma Diaries got 5,437 pageviews in the month of June! This is amazing and way surpassed my expectations for the month. Remember, I only started this blog on May 23, so I’m stoked with the amount of traffic that has been coming to the blog.
Where is the traffic coming from?
The majority of traffic to MelasmaDiaries has been coming from social networks. Pinterest brought over 2340 page views and Facebook brought just under 1,000. These are going to be the two main networks that I focus on in order to drive traffic to the site.
Ideally, I want the #1 driver of blog traffic to be Google. So I’ve been using the Yoast plugin to optimize my blog posts for search. The next thing I need to do is create some epic infographics or guide and promote those in an effort to get some link backs from other bloggers.
Monthly Income from a new blog: $28.26
I created several round-up type posts for Best Sunscreen for Melasma & the Best Foundation for Melasma which included Amazon affiliate links to the products. I then created large (and long) Pinnable graphics to go with these. This worked out really well, they have been pinned over and over again and from what I can tell are coming up in Pinterest smart search for similar searches, so that is GREAT!
Google Adsense: $13.36
Right now I have 3 Google Adsense ads on the site. Up until last week I had a header, footer and long side banner ad. A few days ago I switched out the long banner in exchange for a 300×250 to see if it would increase the revenue…it’s still a little too early to tell on that one.
In June, I wrote a total of 9 posts (some of those were done by the content writer I hired). The #1 post on my site currently is the Top 5 Melasma Makeup YouTube Tutorials list post. This one has done well on Pinterest and as a result Pinterest is driving a lot of traffic to the post.
Challenges going forward:
One of the things I’ve realized is that people don’t necessarily want to follow accounts with Melasma in the name..which is why I think I’m struggling to get Pinterest followers. I’ve only been able to get 48 followers on Pinterest, despite using my tried & true followers for getting Pinterest followers, it’s not working. I haven’t even tried to get followers on Insta or Twitter yet until I figure out what to do about the name. I’ve contemplated changing the name to something a little more friendly..but haven’t made any decisions on that yet. You may see an update about the name in the next month’s update.
