How Much Does it Cost to Start a Mom Blog?

Below you will find 5 questions you need to ask yourself before deciding on a domain name for your blog.
- Is it hard to spell? Choosing a domain name is one of the biggest decisions you will have to make when starting a blog. Much like naming your children, this name will follow you for the rest of your blog’s life…so it should be good…and spelled as accurately as possible. While we’ve seen a bunch of odd spellings for children’s names, it’s not always a good thing to do that when it comes to domain names…especially if you plan to create a brand around it. For example, imagine you are at a blogging conference and you really hit it off with a potential advertiser in the elevator, you don’t have a business card on you, and you tell them to look you up at “CraftyKitchens.com” only you spell it “KrafteeKitchenz.com”. Chances are they won’t find you

- Is it intuitive? Does your domain name let your readers know what your blog is about? I once ran a blog that was called I Love To Gossip.com, which would’ve been a great name if the blog was about celebrity gossip, but no…it was about coupons. The domain name didn’t really match the content I was writing about. After a few years, I rebranded to CouponKarma which was more aligned the blog posts.
- Is it brandable? If your goal is create a business out of your blog or to position yourself as an expert in your field, you’ll want a domain name that has some penache, something that can really stand on it’s own as a brand. Ask yourself, is this domain name memorable? Am I proud to stand behind this name? If the answer is YES, then you’ve got yourself a winner. If you aren’t sure, then it’s better to brainstorm some more until you have one that you are confident about.
- Is it sellable? Many people choose to use their name as a domain name and that is perfectly fine to do if your goal is to brand yourself as an expert in your field. However, if your end goal is to eventually sell the blog, then you might want to consider using a name that isn’t so personalized. You may have a hard time selling a blog that has your personal name as the domain name.
- Does it infringe on anyone’s trademark? I learned this one the hard way! You definitely want to make sure that your domain name and blog title don’t infringe on anyone’s trademark. A few years ago, I had a blog called “Krazy for Keurig” where I would share deals on K-Cups and Keurig Brewers…well it wasn’t long before I got a cease and desist email in the mail from Keurig Brewers asking me to take down the website and Facebook page and hand over a copy of my earnings from the site. You can do a quick Trademark check on the USPTO website to see if you are infringing on anyone’s name.
Now that I’ve given you some of my top tips for finding a domain name, I’d love to hear which domain name you’ve chosen. Leave me a comment with your newly purchased domain name!
