How Much Does it Cost to Start a Mom Blog?

Less than the price of a box of diapers!

So many of my blogging clients admitted that they had been afraid to get into blogging because of the perceived high cost. They assumed it was expensive and complicated and weren’t sure they wanted to make such a huge investment on something they weren’t even sure they would be able to commit to. I LOVE being able to tell wanna-be bloggers how cheap blogging really is, because it’s often gives them the motivation to get started!

Let’s take a look at some of the costs of starting a blog:

  1. Domain Name – Domain name pricing can vary between registrars, but typically you can expect to pay anywhere from $10- $20 dollars per year.  However, you’ll definitely want to keep your eye out for coupon codes and deals…for example, you can get a FREE domain name by purchasing a one year hosting plan on Bluehost.
  2. Hosting – Hosting will be the biggest expense when it comes to blogging. Once again pricing can vary by hosts and size of bandwidth. If you are just starting out, you can get by with this starter package from Bluehost for as low as $3.25 a month!
  3. Graphic Design – Looking to make some Pinterest friendly images or design a logo, you can either go the expensive route with Adobe Photoshop Elements or you can go for the free route with either Canva or PicMonkey. Both options are FREE graphic design tools for bloggers.
  4. WordPress Themes – If you are interested in upgrading your current wordpress theme, then you have two options: FREE or Premium. A quick Google Search for “Free WordPress Themes” will give you more options than you can shake a stick at. OR if you are looking for something a little more professional looking, you can use a site like ThemeForest to find a theme. The themes on ThemeForest are priced anywhere between $30-$100.

As you can probably tell by now, blogging can either be very cheap or very expensive. It all depends on what you want out of it, and it all depends on how successful you hope to be.

If you are just starting out and budget is a big factor, then I’d recommend going with the FREE domain name and starter package with Bluehost. Use Canva or PicMonkey for your Graphic Design and a FREE WordPress theme and your total annual cost is only $39.00!

Total cost for first year of blogging is only $39.00!

Hi Chrystie, I have been following your blog for a while now and I love reading your post! I am a new mommy blogger and I blog about Motherhood, DIY, Food and Fitness. My problem is, I do not get a lot of traffic, just a few views per day from referral places where I post my DIY and Food post. I don’t get people interacting with my post. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if there is a problem with my post, if they are not interesting enough. Do you have any advice? I would really appreciate any feedback.

Hi Pam! I just checked out your blog and it is great! I do have a few suggestions for you in terms of getting interaction & traffic to your blog. There are several FB groups that you can join which encourage blogger interaction & social sharing, this is a great way for a blog to get some traction. (This is one of my faves–> https://www.facebook.com/groups/growyourbloggroup/).

Also, I think you could be driving more traffic to your site via Pinterest by optimizing your images. I haven’t gotten around to writing an article Pinterest, but here is a link to my Pinterest tips Pinterest board, there are lots of articles there that can help you! https://www.pinterest.com/naptimenation/pinterest-pro-tips-for-bloggers/ Hope that helps! :)
