The 3 Things your Affiliate Posts Need to Make the Most Money!

One of my absolute favorite ways to make money with my blog is through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing involves recommending a product on your blog, for which you’ll receive a kick back (MONEY$$$) on when someone buys the item. There are MANY honest and reputable affiliate marketers out there, who kick butt doing honest and helpful recommendations and reviews. There are also a lot out there who aren’t so honest. If you are reading this blog, I’m going to assume that you are a nice person…actually even better than nice, you are a kick-ass person who values your integrity..which is why I’m going to share some of my favorite affiliate marketing secrets with you today. I want you to test out these strategies in your own blog posts and report back to me your results. I think that you’ll be surprised by how doing things just a little different can have a huge impact on your affiliate conversions!

#1 A picture of you with the product – I haven’t found this tip in many of the affiliate marketing blog posts that I’ve read but it’s my #1 secret weapon. (I once helped a client sell over 1,000 subscription boxes in a day simply by adding a picture of the them with the subscription box!) Here’s the deal, your readers come to your blog because of YOU! They want to see your face! Your readers want to see you enjoying the product. They want proof that you actually touched, felt, smelled the product with your own eyes, ears and hands! I understand that it can be an upfront expense to purchase the product, however, you will make that money up in the long run by the increased number of sales you’ll have!

I frequently do subscription box reviews on my site One of my favorite products to promote is the Julep Boxes! (Get your first box free!) Because this is a product I love, you’ll see multiple pictures of me throughout the site with the Julep boxes, wearing the Julep nailpolishes and the makeup!

#2 Styled photographs of the products – I understand we are not ALL natural born photographers, however, if you are going to get serious about blogging, it’s definitely worth your time to get familiar behind the camera, because PHOTOS ARE EVERYTHING!

I usually try to take some very styled, pretty & bright shots of box, nail polishes or makeup. I use photo backdrops purchased on Amazon and shoot in natural light near a window in my house to get the best photographs. The key here is to make the products look their absolute best. So you’ll want to avoid posting photos of the items if they are blurry or if the background is messy. Take the extra time to take really good photos, it will be worth it in the end.

P.S. I didn’t always follow these guidelines, check out the pics I used in this 2013 review! It’s a learning lesson people 🙂

#3 Your Honest Review – It can be REALLY tempting to post a positive spin on an okay product because you want to make the affiliate sales. But DON’T do it! Don’t ever compromise the relationship you have with readers to make a few extra pennies! Your readers trust you, and they want to know what you actually think about a product. Above, I’ve included a video that I filmed a few years ago, to show my readers that I absolutely HATED the Mac Maleficent Lip Gloss. Guess what this did? It made them realize that I was a real person, with real feelings and that I didn’t love everything. They can relate to that!

Now that I’ve shared my top 3 secrets to affiliate marketing posts, I’d love to hear how you increased conversions on your affiliate marketing and review posts! Leave me a comment!

  4. Angie @ My So-Called Chaos

This is really good information. I think some people really struggle with their affiliate links.

    • Chrystie

Hi Angie! Totally agree. It’s a fine balance between being honest and too salesy 🙂

  5. Denay DeGuzman

These are great tips! What I like to do is integrate them into my blog posts as seamlessly as possible. Once I’ve written a post I find affiliate links for: 1. Wonderful items I already have and love. 2. Items I feel will be really helpful to my readers. 2. Items that will visually enhance my content with their beauty. 🙂

    • Chrystie

Totally Agree! It’s all about finding the right items that are consistent with our personal brand! Thanks for the comment Denay 🙂

  6. The Cuteness

Awesome tips! Actual styled pics of the items is a great one. Just plain links by themselves don’t work all that well.

I’m really hoping to monetize my blog this year and have read that affiliate marketing is a sure fire way to go. These tips will come in hand when I get to that point. Are their any specific affiliate programs you recommend…especially for newbie bloggers?

    • Chrystie

Yes! 🙂 My favorite programs at Amazon & ShareASale. I also use Skimlinks to link to ANY product that I’m not affiliated with! It’s an easy way to get started with affiliate marketing without having to join dozens of different programs 🙂 Hope that helps! 🙂

  8. Chelsea

I’m all about the styled photography and put a lot of effort into that! It’s what sucks me in to make a purchase if I see something on someone else’s blog, so I do my best on my own blog with that for sure. Great tips!

  9. Logan

I love these tips! Now that you mention it, I definitely see your point on taking a photo of yourself with the product. I am much more likely to buy something if I see it on someone.

  10. Amanda Butler

Thank you for some great tips! Will be implementing the photo with the product!

  11. Jenny

I will definitely have to try and implement some of these 🙂

    xoxo, Jenny

These are fantastic tips Chrystie, thank you for sharing. #1 really resonated with me – it seems like a no-brainer to do that, yet I hadn’t thought about it before today, and from what you said, it doesn’t seem to rate much of a mention in other affiliate marketing tip blog posts. I will definitely be using these tips moving forward, thanks!

  13. Tara

I haven’t done much affiliate marketing, but you’re right – I tend to be drawn toward bloggers who are honest and aren’t obviously posting something to make money. That really turns me off.

  14. Heathrr with WELLFITandFED

I got totally lost in your post and forgot I was there to comment. That is a really good sign. Love love love your vibe. Thanks for being here and now I know where to get Amazon backdrops amount many other new and great things!

  15. Abbey - Mind, Body, Babies

I have just started using affiliate links, so these are great tips so I don’t end up spinning my wheels!

  16. Mimi Rose

Thanks for sharing these tips, they’re definitely good ones! I find I have to stop myself sometimes to not automatically put that positive spin on affiliate related posts, but integrity always wins out. It’s so so important to be honest with your readers, because that’s why they come to your blog in the first place – for your opinion + personality!

  17. Alison

OMG that video is everything! Great tips too, thanks for sharing. And the tip about the background is fantastic – THANK YOU!! Do you have a blog post or photos using these backgrounds? Can’t believe how inexpensive those are.

  18. Carrie

I love these tips! I joined a network marketing company to help monetize my blog, so this is perfect.

  19. Jenny

I’m fairly new to blogging…how do you even get the attention of the products you are talking about in your blog? I talk about products & even places to visit (mostly kid friendly places) & would love to get their attention to start making a small profit but don’t know how to do that. Do you have an article on this? Or could direct me? Thanks in advance!

  20. Kristi Trimmer

I TOTALLY forgot about that video!! Loved watching it again. Makes me miss your smiling happy face!! Great tips – are you the Affiliate Queen Master Jedi. 🙂

  21. Shari

These tips are so awesome and I’m spending my preschool time work hours totally roaming your site. All of the suggested content after each read has me hooked! I really like how easy to read your posts are — Not too long but packed with the info it promises.

  22. Emma and Rose

Thank you so much for ALL your helpful tips. I just started blogging and am so grateful I’ve got you as a guide. I have a question about #2. For now I’ve taken full body pictures of myself standing in front of a mirror, but you can see the mirror. Not very professional looking. How do you take a full body selfie without the mirror or having someone take a picture of you?

  23. Bridget

These are really great tips! I haven’t made any money yet with my reviews and I bet this is the reason why. &’
Definitely going to take more of my own pictures. Thank you!

  24. Jon

    Great tips Chrystie,

I have just started with my e-com journey and am Learning a lot. I appreciate the tip about photos including you. That seems like a great way to make a post “real”.

Chrystie, I will take these and hopefully turn them into action.

    Thanks for sharing!

  25. Hena | Mending with Gold

Wow, I didn’t even think about this before. I’m so gonna use these.
I usually promote digital products and your #1 has given me a brilliant idea on how to shoot stuff like that.
For promotions, I also like to answer a question I see people in my circle asking about the product. For example, the last sale, I was promoting a course and I saw A LOT of people asking about this e-course in comparison to another similar course.
So I made an investment! I bought the other course and before the next sale, I’m writing a comparison of both these which I haven’t seen anywhere else. Yes, it cost me, but I know I’ll be helping so many people make a better decision.
    Thanks for the tips. Pinned!
