StumbleUpon: The Ultimate Guide to Driving Massive Traffic to your Blog

What is StumbleUpon?

StumbleUpon is a social discovery & sharing platform that allows users to vote on whether or not they like a website. Users can either give a site a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down. If they give the page a Thumbs Up, the page will then be recommended to others who have shown an interest in that category. THIS can be the holy grail for bloggers. Getting your page stumbled by many people can lead to thousands and thousands of new visitors to your site. BUT, like all social media sites, there are a few things you should know about StumbleUpon before jumping in!

Why should bloggers use StumbleUpon?

The biggest reason bloggers should use Stumbleupon is to drive traffic to your blog. Stumbleupon can be a great source of traffic, bringing thousands of readers to a site…if it gets stumbled often.

StumbleUpon can also be a great resource in terms of finding content that your readers may enjoy which you can then share on your blog, your Facebook page or on Pinterest.

What are the Rules of StumbleUpon?

Like most social platforms, there are a few rules that you should live by in order to make StumbleUpon most effective

Don’t just Stumble your own pages – Just like most social platforms, if you ONLY stumble your own pages, the platform is going to start ignoring you. It wants to see a full range of the websites you like, in which case you are going to need to start stumbling other pages. A good rule of thumb is: for every 1 page of your site you stumble, you should stumble 10 others.

Be consistent – You’ll want to get in the habit of using StumbleUpon on a daily or weekly basis so the platform gets to understands your likes & dislikes. This helps the platform share the right content to you and to other Stumblers.

How to use StumbleUpon for your blog?

There are two ways in which you can interact with StumbleUpon and that is to use “Add a Page” and to “Stumble” (aka give a thumbs up or thumbs down) to the pages that StumbleUpon delivers to you. Both are important to do on a daily and weekly basis.

The first thing you NEED to do:

Once you’ve hit publish on a new blog post, one of the first things you’ll want to do is to Add your page to StumbleUpon to get it into the sharing platform.

There are a few ways that you can stumble a page and add it to your list of likes:

Add a Page – One way you can add your blog to StumbleUpon is to visit your StumbleUpon profile and click on “Add a Page” This will prompt you to add the URL to the blog or website you would like to Stumble.

Social Sharing Buttons – You can also use the social sharing buttons on your site (if you have any…which you should!) to Stumble your own page. For example, I have the SumoMe plugin which is a floating social icons on the left side of my website. From there you can click on the StumbleUpon icon and it will add the page to your list of StumbleUpon likes.

stumbleupon-toolbar

StumbleUpon Toolbar – You can download the StumbleUpon toolbar which places a thin StumbleUpon strip at the top of your browser. The strip features a Thumbs up or Thumbs Down tool that you can use to quickly give a web page a thumbs up.

Next Up: Categorizing your New Stumble

Once you add a page on StumbleUpon it will ask you to choose a category or categories for your blog post. Choose wisely when selecting your category because the category will determine which audience sees your page. If you add your post to a category it doesn’t belong to, it could get down voted pretty quickly by the shrewd Stumblers.

Now that you’ve added your blog post and chosen a category for your page, it’s time to get Stumbled…

How to get Stumbled?

Join FB Sharing Groups – There are FB groups (like this one & this one) that encourage it’s members to stumble the other member’s pages. This can be a great way to get some traction on StumbleUpon.

Stumble & Add other blogger’s content – You’ve got to give the love to get the love. One easy way to do this is to download the StumbleUpon toolbar and give a thumbs up to blog posts you find helpful and useful.

Send a shoutout to your followers – StumbleUpon allows you to send a shout out to your followers. It’s essentially, a “Hey I just posted something I think you’d like” (hint hint..please stumble my post). You can do this by clicking on the ‘Arrow in a box” icon on the StumbleUpon toolbar and it will bring up a message box that you can use to send to your followers.

Ok…Now What?

Sit back and wait for the millions of page views. KIDDING! Listen, StumbleUpon traffic CAN be great, however, it’s definitely not guaranteed. You’ve got to be consistent with it in order to get some traction.

Let’s Recap:

  • Set up a StumbleUpon Account
  • Add your blog posts to StumbleUpon as soon as they are published
  • Choose relevant categories
  • Encourage others to Stumble your page by joining share threads in FB groups or by sending a shoutout to your followers.
  • Stumble other’s pages at a rate of 1 (yours): 10 (others)
  • Keep pumping out awesome content
  • Rinse & Repeat

I have definitely noticed that when I consistently use StumbleUpon, it rewards me with pageviews. I’ve had a lull with the changes on pinterest and facebook. I think it’s time to re-direct my attention to StumbleUpon! Plus, it’s a really fun way to discover new things online.

Can you stumble your own blog post multiple times (using the 1:10 ratio) or is that a bad idea?
