How to Write Your First Blog Post in WordPress

Now that you’ve got your WordPress blog all set up, it’s time to start writing! While I can’t necessarily tell you WHAT to write about in your blog, I CAN tell you the steps you need to take to write your first blog post in WordPress!

  1. Login to your blog (If you forgot the URL,  it’s usually http://www.yourURLhere.com/wp-login.php)
  2. Once you are logged in, you’ll want to click on “Posts” found on the top left side of your blogging dashboard.
  3. Click on “Add New”
  4. From there, you should see a WYSIWIG Editor similar to an email client. This is where you will write your first post.
  5. Once you are done writing the blog post, all you have to do is click on Publish on the right side and your blog post will be live on your blog!

How to Add an Image to a blog post:

To add an image into your blog post, you’ll want to click on the “Add Media” button found at the top of the WYSWIG editor. From there you will click on Upload Files. You can then either drag and drop your image or use the upload tool and find it in your files.

How to link to another website in a blog post:

If you’d like to link out to another site in your blog post, the first thing you are going to do is highlight the text that you want linked. For example if your sentence is “Check out this amazing Pinterest tutorial” and you will like Pinterest Tutorial to link to another website, then you would highlight “Pinterest tutorial” using your mouse and then click on the “chainlink icon” at the top of the WYSWIG blogging editor. This will open up a little pop-up and in there you can enter the URL you would like the word or words to link to.

How to link to an older blog post on your own blog:

If you would like to link to an older blog post on your own blog, then you should highlight the word or words you would like to be linked and click on the “chainlink” icon above the WYSWIG editor. This will open up a pop-up. From there you will want to click on “Or link to existing content”. This will bring up a list of all of your older blog posts. From there you can select which one you would like to link to.

Adding Categories to a blog post:

You’ll definitely want to start categorizing your blog once you begin writing. On the post page, you should notice a “Categories” section on the right hand side of the dashboard. If you are just starting your blog, you will need to add categories. If your blog post is about Parenting a two year old, some of the categories you might want to use are “parenting”, “tips” “toddlers”. Categories are very helpful in organizing your content for readers.

Adding Tags:

Although not necessary, some bloggers like to add tags to each of their blog posts to help for Google indexing (showing up in Google search results). Tags are very similar to categories and allow you to enter as many keywords as you’d like.
