3 Big Lies Bloggers Believe About Making Money

Confession: I spend waaay too much time on social media.

And while I love to share the latest pic of my daughter picking her nose or my boys drawing on each other, I actually spend most of my time snooping around and posting in blogging Facebook groups. (#bloggerlife)

Know what I’ve discovered from reading others’ posts and questions?

There are a ton of big fat lies that we mom bloggers believe when it comes to making money with our blogs!

I’ve got to call these lies out, because they contribute to our limiting beliefs about how successful we can be and only serve to keep us from reaching our full potential with monetizing our blogs.

Here are 3 big lies bloggers believe about making money (that are total B.S., by the way):

Big Blogging Lie #1: You need a lot of traffic before you can start making money

Ah, traffic. The holy grail of blogging.

Now don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you that traffic isn’t important, because it totally is. But it’s a big fat†lie that you need a ton of traffic before you can start making money!

Yes, high traffic is essential for making money from Google ads, but there are so.many.more ways to make money blogging than just putting up ads.

Here are a few to get your creative juices flowing:

Please, please, please give this lie the boot and start today researching and brainstorming ways that you can make money with your blog without a ton of traffic. It’s totally doable.

Big Blogging Lie #2: You need to be blogging for at least 6 months (or 1 year, or 2 years…) before making money

Nope, not true. While it’s great to have an established blog, it’s not essential for making money.

In reality, you can have a new blog with a super small audience and still make money fast. But don’t take my word for it. Just Google “my first month blogging” or “my first year†blogging” and check out how many bloggers are profitable with a brand new blog!

And yes, you can do it too.

Don’t listen to people who say that you need to be blogging for a certain amount of time before you can start making money. It’s a lie. Just because it took someone else†x-amount of time to become profitable, it doesn’t mean you have to wait that that long, too.

Instead, develop a monetization plan for your blog that doesn’t rely solely on high traffic or blog age. To get started making money on a new blog, ask yourself these 2 questions:

  1. What problems does my audience have and how can I help solve them?
  2. What goals does my audience want to reach and how can I help them get there?

Then, using the answers to these questions, write blog posts and create products that serve your audience. If you use this as your foundation for everything you create – whether articles, videos, social media posts, or products – then monetization comes much more quickly and easily.

Big Blogging Lie #3: You need a product to sell before making real money with your blog

Selling your own products is a fantastic (and super-fast) way to earn money with a blog… but again, not essential!

Learning all the ins and outs of product creation, marketing, and selling can be intimidating. And a big lie that many bloggers believe is that they have to create a product in order to make any real money with their blog – but it’s just not true!

A great alternative to selling your own products is affiliate marketing, and it can be extremely lucrative when done right. In fact, it’s my personal favorite way to make money blogging because it takes little to no maintenance or time once you have it up and running smoothly (perfect for us busy moms).

Nutshell version? Don’t believe the big lies about making money with your blog.

It’s SO NOT necessary to have a ton of traffic, a long-established blog or your own products in order to make good money. Armed with a solid monetization strategy, you absolutely can start making money, even on a new blog.

Love this post! I totally agree with all the things mentioned and I have been trying to learn more about affiliate marketing.

    • Candis at SmartMomBlogger

Hi Lauren! Affiliate marketing – when done properly – is a great way to monetize. It’s my fave because it doesn’t require a ton of traffic (though of course more is better) and it has lasting profit potential.

This is super helpful! Even though my blog traffic has been growing and, I’ve made some money. It feels like those I’ve connected with have an insane amount of traffic before they made money. Thanks for the encouragement

    • Candis at SmartMomBlogger

Hey Jehava – typically more traffic = more profit potential, but it’s simply not true that you need a ton of traffic in order to start making money. If you’re monetization plan relies solely on Adsense revenue, then yes, a boatload of traffic is required. But if you’re crystal clear on who your audience is and how you can help them, you can start making money your very first month using some of the other methods mentioned in this article. Good luck!

Great post! I completely agree. I started making money my third month blogging and I hardly had any traffic! I’m so glad I got started blogging and was very pleasantly surprised that I could make any money blogging so quickly. Even though I’m still making very little (in my 5th here), it’s still possible and very doable!

  8. Jenni Laplow

This is great! I’ve personally never believed these “lies” myself, but I’ve definitely heard them before. If you believe in yourself (and your blog) and put the hard work behind it you can go far!

    • Candis at SmartMomBlogger

Absolutely, Jenni! Hard work and believing you can do it are so so important. In addition though, it’s crucial to have a smart growth/monetization plan in place or you could end up wasting a ton of time.

I just did my first post with affiliate links. I’m learning.. slowly! There is still a ton of things that I need to learn though.

  12. Andi

Love this and have been guilty of believing all of those! I definitely need to get out of the box I have placed my head into and start really going for it.

Loved it! It gave me a lot of inspiration, thank you.

You’re so right! When I had my first blog I didn’t really understand how we could make money. The funny thing was, the traffic was there and we had some affiliate links scattered throughout, but we were really not intentional about monetizing and we definitely believed some of these lies. Now, however, with my new blog and with the knowledge like this and the experience from before, I am moving forward with things sooner and I’m seeing the results. Thank you for this article, it was awesome!

I love reading this and other blogs alike. My only concern is I feel like my niche isn’t exactly the same. So, I’m having trouble relating. My blog, ( ) is more of a lifestyle blog. I blog about my life as an entertainer. So, while I’ve been creating content (slowly…) I feel like I’ve hit a wall. I’m just having trouble getting starting and I’m searching for ideas on how to monetize. Also, I can’t really take a lot of photos in the clubs (because of privacy laws) so, that’s kind of bumming me out. I want my blog to be pretty you know? I feel like maybe I write too much. Which is silly but I eventually want to turn my blog posts into books, so I’m wondering if anyone would even buy if I’ve already explained myself.
    Any thoughts?
